2018-19 Domain Tests: Day 2 of 2nd Test Afternoon Session Review, Australia v Sri Lanka in Canberra

Tim Paine and Kurtis Patterson continued their duties in the middle having helped Australia reach the 500 run mark.

Patterson went on to escape the nervous nineties by converting from 50 into a century here at Manuka Oval.

Only the 2nd Innings of Patterson’s Test career, he has quickly achieved the moment he has waited for Australia.

Paine too scored some quickfire runs up to 45 not out before making a declaration.

That meant Patterson finished his impressive spell of 114 not out with the bat.

Final 1st Innings Score: Australia 5d-534

2nd Innings

The Sri Lankan Opening pair of Dimuth Karunarathe & Lahiru Thirimanne fired off with not much caution.

The way they block off the good deliveries and use plenty of open bat face shots closer to the ball made life difficult for the Australian bowlers.

Even the attention of spin just before tea didn’t help as Sri Lanka remain unbeaten late in this session.

Day 2 Tea: Sri Lanka 0-47 & Trails by 487 Runs

Surprisingly no wickets have taken in this session by both teams at Manuka Oval.

Australia’s batting still looked top standard when Patterson’s experienced status at Shield level took little time to get settled in the Baggy Green.

Another potential Ashes belter in the middle-order role to come for Patterson.

The same goes from Tim Paine who batted classicly with no rush needed to use plenty of flat bats to up his score rate.

Yes, he may have missed a half-ton.

But Paine has to get going to focus on winning this Test match as the Skipper of Australia.

Their bowling needs some work after Tea to make it click by unleashing the pace and make the batsman play under pressure.

Sri Lanka’s bowling continued to suffer from balls flying everywhere and not attacking the stumps.

Even though they have a big job to catch up, the batting doesn’t look too bad.

So keep hammering those basics through the rest of the day and tomorrow to bounce back.
